Taking great care of ones beard soon becomes a natural part of any furry face gentleman's daily routine. But what many of us are guilty of doing is forgetting to take care of the face thats hidden beneath the beard. So, today I wanted to discuss the main causes of skin irritation and give a little advice on how to prevent these troublesome areas from forming in the first place...
INGROWING HAIRS HAPPEN, AND CAN BE RATHER PAINFUL!
If you were prone to poor skin and breakouts prior to growing out a beard the chances are these problems will still persist hidden behind your beard. Ingrowing hairs can form rather easily and can hurt like a bitch when they do too. The key to prevent this is to help keep the your face hydrated. Now, I don't mean you should chuck a bucket of water over your head every morning and walk around all day like a wet soggy sock. You can help keep both your beard and skin well hydrated by simply using beard oils and balms frequently. This will help keep your skin in good shape, as well as repairing any problem areas within your beard.
A RED ITCHY RASH HAS BEGAN TO FORM, HELP!
This is probably one of the most common skin issues you'll come across when it comes to beards. Usually a red rash begins to form below the beard, which can often be rather itchy. And if you over scratch the effected area you can cause your skin to dry out and scab over. I've experienced a bad bout of this myself when I first began growing out my ginger man-mane. It proved rather puzzling as to what could have caused this to begin with, as I was already providing both my beard and face with plenty of beard oil as and when needed. It wasn't until a short time later that I clocked what I was doing wrong. When washing my beard in the shower I wasn't fully washing out the soapy suds, which were having a bad reaction to my skin overtime. So, if you're experiencing a similar problem it's highly possible you may be doing the same. It may visibly look like your face forest is fully rinsed out, but taking a couple of extra minutes to be 100% sure should fix any red rashes from forming again in the future.
THE SKIN BELOW THE BEARD FEELS TIGHT AND UNCOMFORTABLE, HELP!
Your skin may appear to feel tighter than usual and even begin to somewhat sting. The two main factors that often cause these effects are 1 - a change in seasons. And 2 - using overly hot water to wash your beard.
When the weather temperatures change from season to season your skin can sometimes struggle with the transition and humidity of the changing weather. When the colder winter months come into play this is the most likely time when your problems may first arise. As the harsh freezing weather quickly causes your skin to lose valuable moisture, which then gives the tight feeling many often complain about experiencing.
Whilst there is very little we can really do about battling the weathers elements, wearing a neck scarf when communicating and keeping your beard covered and well hydrated usually helps. When it comes to keeping your beard clean it's real important to not blast overly hot water throughout your beard. Doing so can strip out the natural moisture formed within your skin and throughout your beard which can contribute to skin irritation and soreness. Keep the temperature of the water warm but not too hot. The cooler the better in my honest opinion.
USING INCORRECT PRODUCTS WHEN CARING FOR YOUR BEARD MIGHT BE THE REAL PROBLEM!

When it comes to beard maintenance, cutting corners should never be an option on the cards, and the same goes for the products you choose to use.
