Having a bad ass beard is most certainly one of life's treasured gifts. Unfortunately not everyone is cut out to experience the beardy journey, be it through lack of want or not being able to successfully grow out a beard. But when you pack the perfect beard-mane you'll often pick up a host of bad habits along the way. Habits you are probably unaware even exists. Today we are going to highlight the most obvious habits and give you a few beardy pointers on helping you kick such habits moving forward in your beard growing journey.
SEARCHING OUT KNOTTED HAIRS IN YOUR BEARD!
At times you'll reach for out for your beard and you may discover the odd hair follicle that appears to be a little knotted or matted together. It doesnt matter how neat and tidy you keep that beard, knotting is pretty much inevitable. Given a little time on the said area can often resolve the issue with a little extra care and attention most times this can be untangled rather easily. So, worry not!
PULLING OUT TROUBLESOME BEARD HAIRS IS A NO GO!
Referring back to the last topic of advice you might feel the urge to pull out any troublesome beard hairs you discover when having a jolly good thumble with your beard. I can totally relate to this myself but please try really hard to avoid picking away at your beard, as excessively doing so can lead to you unwillingly thinning out certain areas of your beard or even worse, create bald patches on your cheeks! When grooming your beard you'll more often than not notice your beard hairs naturally falling out when they are loose and have come to the end of their growth journey, but if you pull away at certain areas you'll only cause yourself a whole heap of problems and a terrible to shake habit will in time begin to form. My best piece of advice would be to suggest when you discover any knots or troublesome areas within your beard you gently work them between your fingers rather than plucking away at your patiently growing facial forest. This way you'll more often than not resolve the problem rather than brutally plucking away at your furry chops.
KEEPING YOUR BEARD CLEAN IS KEY, BUT DO NOT OVERWASH IT!
I have mentioned this a few times in previous beard blog posts, but over washing your beard can do it more harm than good. Over washing will wash out your beards naturally formed essential oils which can cause hair weakness and dry out your beard and face, causing you future problems such as 'beardruff' and other nasties. I would suggest you wash your beard no more than twice a week, giving your beard a much needed break from shampoos and any other cleaning products you may already be using in the shower.
MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECT PRODUCTS ON YOUR BEARD!
This is a habit many bearded Gents unnoticeably fall into without realising they are doing so. So, you're in the shower and you reach out for your hair shampoo and conditioner. Whilst you are doing so you happily splosh the said product all over your beard to help keep things clean, fresh and tidy. Heck, whats the harm? it is for hair after all! The problem is beard hair is very much different to the hair growing on your head. Beards are much more coarse and often gets referred to as being very similar to pubic hair, and rightfully so. And with that you'll need to take a little extra care on the products you choose to use when washing your facial fluff. Using incorrect beard wash is a huge no go, but worry not, we have you covered!
COMBING YOUR BEARD IS GOOD, BUT DO NOT OVER COMB!
There is a fine line when it comes to combing your beard, as it is absolute key to keeping your beard in great shape and should be an essential part of a bearding mans grooming regime. But if you over comb, or more importantly comb the beard with an incorrect brush/comb you are more than likely going to cause unwanted damage to your beloved beard, which would most certainly lead to split ends and dead hairs. I usually brush/comb my beard between three to four times a day. First being in the morning as I wash and prepare for the day ahead. Second being around the midday mark to tame the beard back into place with a touch of 'TBS' balm or oil. Then finally later on in the evening. I'd suggest you use a wide tooth comb to narrow your chances of beard snagging or pulling. We also stock the prefect 'TBS' beard comb that I use for day to day use that you can find on our online store.
